Sleep Studies

A sleep study is a test that is performed to test a person for sleep abnormalities. The most common of which is Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a condition that occurs when the muscles of the upper airway partially or completely collapse during sleep, resulting in the closing of the airway. Symptoms may include frequent snoring, high blood pressure, being overweight, morning headaches, not waking up refreshed, difficulty concentrating or completing tasks at work, feeling sleepy during the day, dozing off easily during the day, awake at night gasping for air or choking, kicking or twitching movements during sleep, pauses in breathing, and falling asleep while driving.

MRI, CT Scans & X-Ray

MRI is proving to be very beneficial for imaging knees, shoulders, and spines. The scanner is a large magnet with exceptional image quality. Orthopedic and neurological surgeons rely on these scans to decide the right course of action for correction. MRI is also used to check arterial blood flow to organs such as the brain and kidneys. This is called MRA (magnetic resonance angiography.

CT Scans have been around a lot longer than the MRI and its application is more for injuries, stroke, and bleeds in the brain. Biopsies are done with CT guidance by a radiologist. The CT scanner is also used with injections done for pain management. A radiologist can inject a medication directly into a joint space or spinal region that can alleviate the chronic pain in instances where it is appropriate.

X-ray, or regular radiography, is performed at Roseau Area Hospital through computerized radiography. This allows the radiologist to adjust on computer the contrast (black & white) and the densities (darkness & lightness) on a film to enhance the image and obtain the most information possible. It also makes it possible to send these images to a connected site or burn on a CD or store in an archive for future comparison.

Pulmonary Rehab

Pulmonary Rehab is an individualized education and muscle conditioning program designed to help manage individuals that have the following respiratory problems: chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, or any other type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The program, which is held twice a week for 10 weeks, consists of exercise and education of their disease process for about an hour per session. Benefits include enhancement of doing daily tasks, reducing hospitalizations, increased exercise tolerance and performance, relief from symptoms of their respiratory disease (less short of breath), improvement in their emotional well being, and increased survival rate for some patients.

All general ultrasound is performed routinely at Roseau Area Hospital, with echocardiology done on a weekly basis. High-resolution sound waves diagnose gallstones, breast masses, fetal growth and other anomalies as well as placental and gynecology and testicular pathology. Transvaginal ultrasound is performed to better visualize small structures like ectopic (outside the uterus) pregnancy. The equipment used here is all Dicom compliant meaning it can be networked for emergency readings if necessary.
